Virtual MTV Launches Alpha of Browser-Based Experience

Late last year, through a partnership with Seventeen Magazine, some vMTV users got an early look at Cribs, a new feature for the virtual world that for the first time didn’t require a download to access. According to an email sent out to vMTV users today, in a few weeks the entire community will be switching over to focus on a browser-based experience, but it’s available in alpha today at virtual.mtv.com.

The virtual world itself is still called Virtual MTV, with the traditional, downloadable world still available as MTV 3D Plus. Users will have the same login, profile, and account information and credits, making it possible to try out the lightweight version with a lower barrier to entry and then take the plunge into the more immersive environment easily once users are sold on it.

MTV has previously tried out that approach with a branded experience in Gaia Online, but now it’s owning the full approach. With more competition for youth virtual worlds, even with the support of a brand like MTV, it’s a smart approach. It’s also an approach that at least a few other large media companies are interested in, according to Multiverse, which today began demoing a platform that allows just that approach.

MTV is keeping mum about further details until the community has had a chance to test out the new virtual world.

The full email to vMTV users:

Dear vMTV member,

In August of 2006 MTV launched its own virtual world where you could watch our shows and live the MTV life, virtually. You’ve sent us your comments and we listened. We’re excited to let you know that you can now check out a new and improved version of Virtual MTV at virtual.mtv.com! This new ALPHA version is browser-based and allows you to create an avatar, get your own crib, explore virtual worlds and play games.

Here’s how it’s going to work: On February 19, 2009, vMTV (www.vmtv.com) will officially close and the new virtual world experience will begin. You will be able to link your new virtual account with your old one and convert your MTV$ to our new virtual currency, MTV Coin, at a 1:1 exchange rate (e.g., 1 MTV$ will convert to 1 MTV Coin). Be sure to link your accounts by February 18th or your existing MTV$ will not be eligible for conversion for use in the new Virtual MTV.

To convert your MTV$ amount to MTV Coin, you first have to sign up for MTV.com and then link your existing avatar to that account (it helps if the email you use for vMTV is the same). If at any point you have trouble linking your account, please email us at [email protected] For terms and conditions of the use of MTV Coin in Virtual MTV please see our Virtual Reality Additional Terms for MTV.com (http://www.mtv.com/sitewide/mtvinfo/virtual_terms.pdf).

Thanks for playing and we hope to see you in our new world – we built it with you in mind!

Thanks and enjoy,
MTV Staff

It’s really a shame the way mtv handled this situation. They told members for months they were not going to close the 3D world.
They let members continue to spend money on the 3D world, and now they are closing without any kind of reimbusement for the items they have purchased.
If nothing else they should reimburse members somehow for the purchases they made from the time they publically announced in the vmtv forums they were not closing up until they announced they were closing.
I see that as a serious breach of trust. It not only has turned me off any type of mtv virtual worlds, but mtv in general.

It’s really not cool that they did this and it is a big step down in quality, trust me, this thing was much cooler back in the day, like last week. I am sad that it closed cuz it was a bore killer. But I will move on, do you have to pay to join there.com?

Everyone loses something when a virtual world or game shuts down and it happens all the time. I think MTV has done a lot to help transfer things over to their new platform, most don’t even do that. I can’t believe this move wasn’t done with lots of planning and I’m sure everyone working with and for them knew, I can’t believe any MTV employee would have been dishonest, at any rate the new world is just that new, and growing with interesting things coming in daily. I go to a world for the friends and new people to meet. I am having fun being part of a world that is just starting to grow and open to the suggestions by the people in there taking part in it all.

It is cool that MTV is including it’s customers so early on in the process of this alpha world. Allowing members to enter and comment is risky, but members need to keep an open mind and realize this is NOT the end product. I can see a lot of potential to reach a broad audience. Good luck MTV.

The positive part of this is that MTV is openening up it’s beta from the very earliest stage. This can be risky to allow a lot of customers to come in before it’s finished. If people keep in mind that this is NOT the end product they can help build it. That is cool! I can see and understand the potential there. Good luck MTV!

The most important thing in a virtual world are my friends. Yeah it’s disappointing to lose my items, but in the end they’re only virtual. People are real.
I’m sure MTV have their reasons for changing the game platform, haven’t we all seen the complaints about constant downloads, patches and unresolved bugs? It’s fun to explore a new world and be a part of the growing process.

It is depressing that MTV has decided to close down its main virtual world. The only virtual world to win an Emmy so far. Due to poor community management and a buggy platform, they are left with a dying community.

It is a shame that they’re closing the 3D world, but the new world is looking better and better everytime I log in! It is a big change, but I’m sure MTV knows what they’re doing.
Buggy platform? The client was messed up in so many ways and nothing ever got changed. I think it’s best that MTV got away from that client anyways since nothing ever got fixed or improved in over 2 years. That’s the same one that is used in There.com, so wouldn’t that track back to Makena?

I would imagine that MTV is going to “make right” by their 3D customers.
I suspect user’s might get the new MTV currency in exchange for their items. Time will tell.

To me, it is a bad feeling, I spent this whole month working very hard and I was very busy and have not logged in for a month and now, today, I got some free time and was gonna login very exited to see what had change on vmtv.. to find out that the whole 3D world is closed. Wow, I spent a lot of my real money on clothes, hair, hoverpack, cars, hoversboards etc. And just now I found out that I lost everything. And I read that letter up there that… if I didn’t transferred all MY STUFF by the 18th that I would loose everything. ” Be sure to link your accounts by February 18th or your existing MTV$ will not be eligible for conversion for use in the new Virtual MTV.”
I think this is very disrespecful. And come on ppl.. 2D will never be like 3D that is just an insult!
