Today SEGA of America launches its first social game, SEGA PLAY! Baseball, on Facebook. The game allows users to create, customize, and manage a baseball team made up of players created by users and their friends. Users can customize their own team names, uniforms, avatars, customize player skills, and recruit players from their friends’ teams. Users can also create their own baseball stadiums and customize them with a variety of virtual items.
Once a user has created a baseball team, players can pit their teams against other Facebook users, friends, or participate in global league play. SEGA also plans to launch the SEGA PLAY! line of games on other social networks, including game-oriented Hi5. The social game initiative may be part of a broader move into freemium online game on SEGA’s part. The company also plans to launch a management-oriented sports sim called MLB Manager Online later this year, at the beginning of the 2011 Major League Baseball season.
