Layered virtual world Weblin is ceasing operations, according to a company newsletter sent to registered users today. Media reports attribute the closure to a lack of funds. Weblin users are being invited to transition Club Cooee, a site run by the former Weblin principals Jan Andresen and Christine Stumpf. According to a welcome screen on the Club Cooee top page, the new destination "offers you and your weblin friends a new home. Messenger meets 3D virtual world … Style your avatar, create 3D chatrooms, chat, watch videos, listen to music and party together!" Weblin had let users chat on top of web pages with avatars through a browser plug-in. It recently introduced a new virtual goods and advertising model to support operations but apparently that wasn't enough for the site to remain solvent.
