Virtual world Weblin is in the process of relaunching after its closure two years ago. Weblin is a layered virtual world that integrates avatars and social interaction into the process of browsing Web pages. At its peak, Weblin served over 3 million users with 170,000 users logging in weekly and had plans to launch a line of virtual goods. After Weblin’s closure, the world’s CTO and founder Dr. Heiner Wolf began work on the Open Virtual World project with an eye toward eventually relaunching Weblin.
It looks like the Open Virtual World project is about to pay off. Weblin and Open Virtual World parent Lupus Labs has offered a bounty to encourage developers to solve recent challenges like creating a transparent browser to serve as GUI platform. Once the transparent browser is complete, Open Virtual World plans to begin constructing the virtual world’s last remaining component, its GUI. Right now Weblin is available through a fan-made client download at freeavat4r.com, but Wolf says an official client download is on the way.
