Location-based social service Gowalla expects to acquire its 1 millionth user later this month. This still leaves it as a distant second to rival Foursquare, which has already passed 6 million registered users. Gowalla continues to roll out steady improvements to the service on both iPhone and Android, emphasizing using location-based information to improve travel and vacations. Users with Gowalla’s app can follow users and check-ins from competing services like Foursquare and Facebook Places, though.
Current updates to Gowalla emphasize making venue details (called Spots), people view, and photos easier to find. Mapping features are improved and it’s easier for users to share and bookmark favorite Spots. Users can now add Highlights directly from a Spots page and Gowalla has introduced dozens of new Highlights categories. New Highlights include “Burgers We Love,” “My Happy Place,” and “WTF.” Highlights roll out next week on Gowalla’s iPhone app, allowing users to automatically track Highlights added by friends. Gowalla 3 is also expected to launch on Android soon.
