Gaia Online began selling charity virtual goods last Friday to raise money for the Red Cross and victims of the recent earthquake and tsunami in Japan. Initially the company said it would match donations up to $10,000, but Gaia Online has since removed that upper limit and pledged to match the value of all donations made via purchase of the virtual goods. Since Friday, Gaia Online has raised $45,000 for the Red Cross through its charity virtual goods program.
Virtual world WeeWorld has announced its own Japan relief effort, which will also revolve around sale of charity virtual goods. WeeWorld and the WeeWorld Avatar Creator iPhone App can now purchased themed charity items like Kibu the Shiba Inu pup, which sells for roughly $1. In the WeeWorld Avatar Creator iPhone App, Kibu will be included in the $1.99 Cweeture Dogs pack. For the next week, all proceeds from sale of the Creature Dogs pack will be donated to the Red Cross’s Japan earthquake relief fund.
