Zynga has acquired Floodgate Entertainment, a veteran developer of PC, casual and mobile games. Floodgate was originally founded in 2000 by employees from Looking Glass Studios, which developed influential PC titles like System Shock and Thief. Floodgate’s team will join the Zynga Boston studio formed after Zynga acquired Conduit Labs last August. Floodgate founder Paul Neurath will join Zynga Boston as Creative Director. This is Zynga’s tenth acquisition in the past ten months.
Zynga currently employees over 1500 people divided among 15 different studios worldwide. Most of those studios were opened or acquired outright within the past year. Zynga’s previous acquisitions include XPD Media, Challenge Games, Unoh Games, Dextrose AG, Bonfire Studios, Newtoy, Flock, and Area/Code. Many of Zynga’s acquisitions seem motivated by the desire to acquire talented engineering teams, as in the case of the Flock acquisition, or technologies like Dextrose AG’s HTML5 engine.
