CNet's Daniel Terdiman has an article up on how Avatar may predict the future of virtual worlds. Terdiman talks to some of the industry's favored futurists (Jerry Paffendorf and Bruce Damer), but also to the long-time producing partner of James Cameron, Jon Landau. Landau has been collaborating with Multiverse and expounded on where he sees virtual worlds going at 2008's Virtual Worlds Expo. Here he boils it down to storytelling built on something very like Avatar's technology. He says we're already almost there (and I'd say the still-growing use of machinima points in the direction); we just lack the consumer-level cameras to do what he and Cameron did.
