Avination, virtual world OpenSim‘s largest commercial grid, has announced that it will integrate Vivox in-game 3D voice chat support this week. The service will be offered free of charge to all users and to private customers that host their own OpenSim grids through Avination.  This is the first time an OpenSim grid has added Vivox support. Other online games and virtual worlds that support Vivox include Second Life, EVE Online, and EverQuest. Vivox serves a total of 45 million users across all partners.

OpenSim grids that attempted to integrate Vivox support in the past often found that the license fee was too high for their community’s total number of users to support. Voice chat support on most OpenSim grids that offer the feature ended up being provided by Freeswitch, which lacks Vivox’s directional sound and avatar synchronization features. Role-playing focused Avination has grown rapidly to become one of OpenSim’s largest grids in the past few months, setting up a functioning virtual economy even getting its virtual currency C$ added to the VirWoX currency exchange service.
