SEE Virtual Worlds has acquired the Planet Calypso virtual world from Entropia Universe creator MindArk for $6 million. SEE Virtual Worlds has also acquired the assets MindArk subsidiary First Planet Company, which will now be called SEE Digital Studios. Planet Calypso launched with the Entropia Universe virtual worlds platform in 2003. It has since acquired over 950,000 registered users from more than 200 countries and territories. Players in Planet Calypso are part of a human colony that’s attempting to build a new civilization on an alien world.
Planet Calypso participates in Entropia Universe’s “real cash economy,” supporting a virtual currency that trades at a 10:1 ratio with the US dollar. While Planet Calypso is far from the largest virtual world online, its virtual economy thrives. In 2010, Planet Calypso supported $428 million in player-to-player transactions, including transactions that broke records for the largest amounts ever paid for virtual property. New owner SEE Virtual Worlds is a developer doing extensive work on the Entropia Universe platform.
SEE Virtual World’s projects include the Planet Michael virtual world based on the live and music of the late Michael Jackson and a Universal Monsters virtual world based on classic Universal horror films like Dracula, Frankenstein, and the Wolf Man. SEE Virtual Worlds plans to incorporate all of the features of the Entropia Universe platform into its licensed virtual worlds, including the real cash economy. Its new SEE Digital Studios developer will continue to maintain Planet Calypso while also beginning work on Planet Michael.
