Facebook has announced that it is testing a new Facebook Credits feature called “Buy With Friends”. The feature would let Facebook users announce virtual goods purchases from social games in their update stream. A friend could “unlock” a special virtual goods deal in the game through the update, which would allow other friends to participate in the deal. Facebook Head of Commerce Product Marketing Deborah Liu says that over 50% of users participating in the initial test are willing to share purchases with friends.
The deals would encourage users to buy the same virtual goods that their friends are buying in whatever social games they play together. Friends unlocking deals by clicking on stream updates would be encouraged to buy through percentage discounts, like 40% off special pet food in a virtual pet game. Liu says this is an example of the kind of programs Facebook can use to help social developers make more money once Facebook Credits become mandatory. Facebook is also working on a system that would let users buy Facebook Credits completely in-app.
