Nintendo has announced an official launch date and price point for the 3DS, which will go on sale in North America on March 27th for a suggested retail price of $249.99. The system will ship with the six augmented reality game cards that will be included in the Japanese edition of the 3DS. In addition to augmented reality, Nintendo is also embracing gamification with the 3DS through a built-in application called the Activity Log. When the Activity Log software is activated, the 3DS doubles as a pedometer and awards the user Game Coins for taking steps. Users can spend Game Coins in other Nintendo apps and software.
Nintendo has not yet announced any details regarding which apps and games will support Game Coins or the types of features and virtual goods users will be able to obtain by spending them. The Activity Log will support other gamification features, tracking how much time users spend with the device and which games they choose to play. When the Activity Log is activated in StreetPass mode, 3DS units will be able to “tag” each other as users pass each other on the street, transmitting their user data records for comparison. The North American 3DS will ship in two colors, Coral Blue and Cosmic Black.
