The PS3 virtual world PlayStation Home turns 2 today. Home now serves over 17 million users who can explore a 3D setting, chat, decorate their personal space, play games, interact with brands, and purchase virtual goods from their consoles. When Home entered open beta on December 11, 2008, it served only 200,000 users with nine games, 25 community events, and 114 virtual items. Now Home hosts 236 games, 600 events, and over 7000 virtual goods.
“In contrast to the handful of simple mini-games offered at launch, we now see a huge variety of games, including massive full-length games developed by some of the most prominent and innovative indie developers in our industry,” said PlayStation Home director Jack Buster, in statements reported by Gamasutra. “The experience of PS Home itself has radically improved over the years as well, with faster load times, zero-wait game access, intuitive navigation, and the addition of features such as group-based voice chat and robust inventory management.”
It’s worth noting that the 17 million figure represents total installs, not how many users log into the world monthly or daily. To celebrate the anniversary, Sony has announced two new games were immediately available for Home: Hellfire Games’s multiplayer shooter Novus Prime and Mass Media’s carnival games collection Midway. In addition, Jet Set Games’s espionage action-puzzle game Conspiracy will launch in home in 2011 and Outso’s Sodium 2 will launch in Spring 2011.
