Kobo has launched a new gamified e-reader app for iPad called Reading Life that lets users “check in” to books or even particularly famous parts of books they happen to be reading. The check-ins can then be shared with friends through major social networks like Facebook. Kobo’s Reading Life will also track the history of books a user reads and award achievements for activities like reading books every day or every night. The achievements can also be shared through Facebook.

Kobo is an e-reading device launched to compete with the likes of Amazon’s Kindle and Barnes & Noble’s Nook. The main selling point for the Kobo hardware is a much lower price point than competing readers. Both Amazon and Barnes & Noble publish their own e-reader apps for iPad and other devices, like iPhone and Android, which let users read purchased e-books across a range of devices. Right now the Kindle and Nook apps lack any gamification elements.
