Rocket Pack has launched Warimals: Cats vs. Dogs, which the developer says is the first HTML5-based game on Facebook. Warimals is billed as an “asynchronous” MMO that combines typical Facebook management-oriented gameplay with tower defense gameplay. Warimals will be available on Android, iPhone, and iPad in addition to Facebook. The game is constructed using Rocket Pack’s Rocket Engine, an HTML5-based game development engine designed to let developers create games that run on multiple platforms without requiring installation or plug-ins.
Several companies are betting on HTML5 development to be the next step forward in social gaming, because HTML5 games can be played natively on most smartphones. Mobile developer Moblyng has ported Playdom’s Mobsters and Sorority Life to Android using HTML5. Social game platform Heyzap has also announced support HTML5 games. PlaySpan has also rolled out a payment service called UltimatePay Mobile designed specifically to support HTML5 apps running on Android handsets.
