A new report from Juniper Research calls for mobile game revenue to top $11 billion by 2015, effectively doubling from the $6 billion mobile games earned last year. Juniper’s report also calls for the market to shift from generating revenue primarily through paid downloads to freemium business models where games are free to download and users pay to download additional content, virtual goods, or virtual currency through in-app transactions. By 2013, Juniper Research expects most mobile game revenue to be generated by in-app transactions.

A previous report by Juniper Research last summer called for freemium mobile games to generate $14 billion by 2014. Juniper Research has clearly been bullish on in-app transactions for quite some time, as the prior report was issued before the App Store had produced any big freemium hits on par with games Digital Chocolate’s titles or Capcom’s Smurfs’ Village. What’s interesting in comparing the two reports is seeing how much lower Juniper Research’s estimates are now, when compared to about 18 months ago.

The continuing transition to in-app transactions will mean more and more microtransactions processed on mobile devices. Will be interesting to see how the carriers, game companies, and platforms wrestle over the revenue from this.
