Capcom Mobile has launched its previously announced mobile social game Smurfs’ Village for iOS devices, in anticipation of the Smurfs live-action and 3D animated film coming out next summer. The game’s look is based on original artwork from the Belgian comics by Peyo and the 1981 Hanna-Barbera animated series. In the game, Papa Smurf guides players into rebuilding the Smurfs’ village from a single mushroom hut and plot of farm land. As players develop their personal Smurf village, they can build specialized huts, colorful gardens, bridges, and footpaths.
Favorite characters from the Hanna-Barbera animated series will appear in the game, like Smurfette and Jokey Smurf. The social game will feature mini-games like Greedy Smurf’s Baking Game, Papa Smurf’s Potion Mixing Game, and Painter Smurf’s Painting Game. The game will support Facebook Connect, though Capcom has not announced a Facebook release for Smurfs’ Village. Smurfs’ Village will be a freemium game that monetizes by selling a cash-based virtual currency called Smurfberries that players can spend to grow crops and finish construction faster.
Capcom plans to support Smurfs’ Village with regular content updates and enhancements. The Smurfs feature film is set for release on August 3, 2011 from Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures Animation. The story will concern the evil wizard Gargamel chasing the Smurfs into New York’s Central Park. The film will be directed by Raja Gosnell and produced by Jordan Kerner. The screenplay is based on a story by J. David Stem and David N. Weiss, based on the original comics and characters created by Peyo.
