TellTale Games is promoting its new poker game Poker Night at the Inventory through a cross-promotion that will allow users to win six different Team Fortress 2 virtual items by playing the game. Poker Night at the Inventory is a crossover casual game for PC that depicts Team Fortress 2’s Heavy, Penny Arcade‘s Tycho Brahe, Sam & Max‘s Max, and Homestar Runner‘s Strong Bad playing poker with each other. The Team Fortress 2 items unlocked by playing the game will be exclusively obtainable through playing or pre-ordering Poker Night at the Inventory.
Players earn the exclusive Team Fortress 2 items by winning special poker rounds where the in-game characters will wager them. There are items available for all of Team Fortress 2’s playable classes: the Iron Curtain and Poker Visor for the Heavy, Max’s Lugermorph for the Scout and Engineer, Tycho’s Wristwatch for the Spy, and the Dangeresque Sunglasses for the Demoman. In addition, Max’s Police Badge will be usable by any character class including the Medic, Pyro, Sniper, and Soldier. Users who pre-order Poker Night at the Inventory will get the Poker Visor automatically.
Poker Night at the Inventory will retail for $4.95 and be available exclusively through TF2 developer Valve’s Steam digital distribution platform. Valve has moved to embrace elements of the freemium model this year, despite being a company that traditionally offers only packaged retail and digital downloads. Steam added support for in-game microtransactions earlier this year. Team Fortress 2 added a cash item shop where users could purchase virtual goods last month, which supports user-generated content.
