Microsoft took down Xbox's Website for a brief period this week so it could relaunch the site with Web support for customizing Xbox avatars and purchasing avatar virtual goods. The updated site also includes more support for the Windows Phone 7 implementation of Xbox Live, which supports avatars and cross-platform connectivity.
The site update will also include other feature updates, like a new interface for messages and notifications, notification procedures for subscription changes, new information on how a given Xbox 360 has been used through the Family Reports feature, and improved search features for the Xbox Live Marketplace. Nine new support regions will also be added to Xbox Live.
The site update is also going to introduce Web games that Xbox Live players can play cross-platform through Windows Phone 7 and the Web. This may explain why Microsoft is going to let players edit avatars and preview avatar items through the Web interface. It seems likely that some of these Web games may support player avatars.
