Building-oriented virtual world Roblox passed 1 million reigstered users this week. In Roblox players can create, customize, buy, and sell content like custom characters, models, virtual spaces, and games to play. Roblox hopes to teach kids who participate in the virtual world about scripting and basic principles of physics. Roblox launched in alpha in April 2006 and took quite some time to come out of beta.

"Most games aimed at kids are the traditional point and shoot video games and don’t allow them to be creative," said Roblox founder and CEO David Baszucki, in a press statement. "Everything on Roblox is generated by the player, and this gives the users a sense of ownership and pride that the traditional video game does not. Roblox makes building fun. The learning is accidental."

While Roblox is freemium, like most virtual worlds, non-paying users cannot sell their creations and access numerous features. Users with Builder's Club subscriptions, which range from $5.95 to $11.95 a month, can access all of the world's features and get a monthly stipend of virtual currency. Roblox has raised $2.2 million in funding last August and has added new features to the world continuously since then.
