Half of Facebook's over 500 million users actively play social games on the platform according to Playdom CEO (and perhaps future General Manager) John Pleasants. In addition, Pleasants says that 40% of all Facebook usage time consists of users playing social games. This is an astonishing stat giving that, also according to Pleasants, the average social game costs between only $100,000 and $300,000 to develop.
Pleasants left his position as COO of Electronic Arts to join Playdom roughly a year ago. He also played a substantial role in beginning Electronic Arts's ongoing transition away from packaged goods and toward digital goods as a major source of revenue. In his year with Playdom, Pleasants has guided the company through a massive number of acquisitions before it was acquired by Disney last week.
