First Planet Company is adding a new starting area to its virtual world Planet Calypso. The area is called the Calypso Gateway and designed to help new players learn about the game by taking missions in an area that's designed to be safer for beginners. While Planet Calypso's real-cash economy makes it very attractive to serious players, the virtual world is also known for featuring a learning curve that can be very steep. Typically players began with nothing but the jumpsuit on their virtual backs.
In Calypso Gateway, players will be able to earn basic equipment by completing missions that teach the basics of mining, hunting, and crafting. The missions are structured like an tutorial and will also try to educate players about the game's real cash economy. The Gateway is off-limits to more experienced players, as it can only be accessed directly after creating a new account. Once completing the beginner content, players can leave the area through a one-way teleporter.
Planet Calypso has set records for the prices of certain virtual items sold in its world, driven largely by the fact that players can earn real-world incomes by acquiring particularly lucrative pieces of virtual property. The virtual world's currency is pegged to the US dollar to help encourage players both to invest their own real funds in the world and cash out by selling their virtual items to other players. Planet Calypso is the first independent world running on the Entropia platform.
