Last week location-based social game Gowalla rolled out an early beta of its long-promised Android version. Previously Gowalla could be played on Android handsets, but only through the game's mobile Web version. Features in this version were extremely limited. The new beta version of Gowalla is available to Android users for free and may be downloaded from this link, rather than from the Android Marketplace.

Gowalla CEO Josh Williams promises the next version of the beta will be available through the Android Marketplace by the end of the month. The current beta does not include the Trips feature, nor does it include virtual goods. Versions of Gowalla for WebOS and BlackBerry are currently in development, as well as an improved mobile Web version.

Gowalla is currently in a race for mindshare with location-based social competitors Foursquare and MyTown, after spending a long time last year in a de facto stealth mode. Gowalla is the first of these services to announce any support for user-created virtual goods, though it still trails in overall number of users.
