Sony Online Entertainment is joining the growing ranks of online game publishers who are offering players charity virtual goods to buy as a way of raising money for disaster relief in Haiti. SOE is offering charity goods in its Free Realms, EverQuest, and EverQuest II games. The charity drive began on January 15th and concludes tonight at midnight (PST).
Instead of offering special charity-only items as some competitors have, SOE is donating $10 for every purchase of the Zando T-Rex pet in Free Realms, the Protectors of Faydark Armor Crate in EverQuest II, or the Plush Bear in EverQuest. SOE will donate a maximum of $25,000 through this campaign. Each of the charity items costs 500 Station Cash, or about $5, to purchase.
SOE is no stranger to raising charity funds through virtual goods sales. Around this time last year, SOE offered exclusive charity items in EverQuest and EverQuest II to raise funds for the Child's Play charity. Child's Play raises funds annually to help donate age-appropriate video games, toys, and game systems to participating children's hospitals.
SOE sold its Child's Play goods at similar prices to the Haiti goods, with the same $10 donation for each purchase. The company raised just over $20,000 with that drive, so it seems very possible that players could make the 2500 virtual goods purchases that would be necessary to max out the Haiti donation.
