User-playstationhome15 Over the past two months, Sony's own virtual world, PlayStation Home, has quietly added 2 million registered users bringing the service's user count to 10 million. Another milestone announced today: a new virtual space within Home called Sodium, developed by Nottingham, UK-based studio Outso. The studio is being called "the leading developer on PlayStation Home" according to director of the PlayStation Home Jack Buser. Sony says today's launch of Sodium is just the beginning – "Due to the flexibility of the PlayStation Home platform, the genre-defying Sodium space will continue to evolve over time. Players can look forward to new games, community events and virtual items to be added, further revealing the story and offering new experiences and challenges.

"Sodium is also raising the bar for Sony as it competes for credibility as a social gaming hub, stating, "Sodium enables PlayStation Home users to interact, communicate and share experiences…. Players looking for a more social experience can become a bartender and serve virtual drinks to friends at the Sodium Hub, or compete with friends in mini games."  A goods-based microtransaction scheme is being embraced via Sodium as well as PS3 owners will be able to customize their Home avatar with Sodium gear — for a price.
