This week the veteran MMORPG publisher Sony Online Entertainment launched Facebook pages for its three flagship games, Free Realms, Everquest, and Everquest II. The company also launched Twitter accounts to represent each of the three games. To help get players of these games involved with the new social media pages, SOE is launching a program called ConnecDING that rewards all players of the flagship games with virtual goods when their social media pages reach certain milestone numbers of Fans or followers.
The milestone levels of Fans and followers for all three games are 5000, 10000, and 25000. Everytime the SOE social media accounts reach a milestone, the account will "ding" (MMO slang for leveling up) and everyone in the MMO the account represents will be able to claim a virtual currency gift. At 5000 the gift is 250 Station Cash, followed by 250 Station Cash and a game-specific virtual good at 10000, then 500 Station Cash and a game-specific virtual good at 25000.
The Free Realms virtual goods being given away as part of the ConnecDING promotion are the House Frog and Small Dance Floor. Everquest is offering players The Tome of Friends and The Magic Lute. Everquest II is offering a comedy item called The Cloak of Pie and an undisclosed item for the 25000 milestone. All of the items are purely ornamental, offering animations to avatars who interact with them but no mechanical in-game advantage.
The ConnectDING promotion began on December 10 and will continue through February 10, 2009. If certain milestones are not met by February 10 then the rewards attached to those items will not be released to the game community. It is not clear if certain gifts may be given out twice if a milestone is met separately on both the Facebook and Twitter accounts for a given game. As of this writing, Everquest II has already surpassed the 5000 milestone on Facebook. On Twitter, Free Realms is closest to achieving its first milestone with 2,823 followers.
