This week BlackBerry manufacturer Research In Motion announced that in-app purchases would be coming to the BlackBerry App World in 2010. The announcement did not state whether RIM would allow in-app purchases in all apps, or in only free or paid apps. The announcement still comes as good news to mobile developers, who will now be able to consider porting games that feature DLC or virtual item purchases to the BlackBerry platform.

The in-app purchases changeover may be tied to a general overhaul regarding the way BlackBerry users are currently billed for data usage. Right now, a user will be billed for their wireless service and data plan through their carrier, but then billed for app purchases separately. RIM has also promised to introduce carrier billing in 2010, so users can pay for all of their BlackBerry-related charges on a single phone bill. This billing model would be similar to the model AT&T uses to bill iPhone users.
