News Brief: Most In-App Purchases Made In Free iPhone Games
According to the analytics company Distimo, the majority of in-app purchases made in free apps on the iPhone platform are now made in games. Distimo reached this conclusion following a study of the top 40 highest-grossing free apps available in the App Store between October 15th (when Apple first permitted in-app purchases in free apps) and the report's publication.
Of those 40 high-grossing apps, 13 were either freemium games or social games made available for iPhone. The other high-performing categories were Books and Entertainment, each charting with 4 apps each. The rest of the apps from the top 40 high-grossing list were a motley selection of apps from far-ranging categories like Lifestyles, Utilities, and Productivity.
In-app purchases also factored into the ranks of Distimo's top 10 paid apps list for October, with the microtransaction-oriented Tap Tap Revenge 3 and F.A.S.T. both charting.
