Reports today surfaced through Finnish media sources and Twitter statements (reported by Arctic Startup) that Habbo publisher and developer Sulake has laid off 40 employees, primarily from the Helsinki area. Sulake has made no official statements yet regarding the news.

Sulake employs about 300 employees worldwide. The reports state that Sulake will continue to lay off employees until it's reduced its overall workforce by 20%, so the company may lose another twenty employees soon.

Habbo was one of the earliest virtual worlds to generate significant revenue through sales of virtual goods. Sulake also operates the IRC Galleria and Bobba virtual worlds, which also sell virtual goods. Despite claiming roughly $73.6 million in revenue for 2008, Sulake's 2008 profits only amounted to $1.5 million.
