A brief portion of Sony's press conference at E3 earlier today focused on the PS3 virtual world PlayStation Home, leading to the disclosure of some interesting new sales figures. Recently Sony used releases of branded virtual goods in Home to help cross-promote with releases of new games. At the E3 press conference, Sony Computer Entertainment America CEO Jack Tretton stated that branded virtual goods for Street Fighter IV and Resident Evil sold more than 200,000 units within two month's time.

In addition, it was stated that the Home catalog of virtual goods for sale was expanding at a rate of roughly 100 new virtual items per month. Major third-party publishers of PS3 titles including Electronic Arts, Namco Bandai, Ubisoft, Activision, and Capcom were all cited as companies that would support Home in the future by offering branded virtual goods and other content to help sate Home's 6.5 million users. While the gaming industry continues to debate the PS3's role in the marketplace, at least it's clear that Home is a successful virtual world by any reasonable standard.
