Sony's free-to-play casual MMO, Free Realms, is prepping to launch today. Aimed at kids, but providing a generally family-friendly environment, the launch represents a significant move for Sony. While the company has long had success with "hardcore" fantasy MMOGs and the subscription model, it's recently begun exploring the virtual goods business.  Free Realms will monetize with traditional microtransactions and subscription elements, but Sony has also partnered with Topps to incorporate a trading card element. The mix in the closed beta, which started in February, is proving attractive to kids and adults alike, suggesting a success for Sony.

"The Free Realms website is undergoing maintenance in preparation for launch," explains a splash page. "We'll be launching Tuesday and look forward to seeing you in the game!"
