Last week we noted that The Field Museum, with funding from the MacArthur Foundation, had launched the WhyReef project in Whyville. The virtual coral reef went live on March 30 and received more than 40,000 visits in the first ten days. One boost, and a reason The Field Museum says it partnered with Whyville, is the existing base of over 4 million registered users. Users are asked to identify and monitor different species, able to play in a food web game, and generally learn with information drawn from the Encyclopedia of Life.

"The Field Museum has a long history of innovation in education and outreach programs, aimed at serving diverse audiences and improving the public’s literacy in science," said Dr. Elizabeth Babcock, The Field Museum’s Director of Education and Libraries. "WhyReef is an important avenue for engaging families in learning about marine life and the consequences of biodiversity loss.
