Virtual Rewards Trump The Physical 85% Of The Time With SmartyCard
Earlier this month saw the debut of SmartyCard, a new service tying educational games to physical and virtual rewards. Parents purchase a set amount of virtual currency, which is then doled out to kids after taking quizzes or following other lessons. Today SmartyCard announced that almost 85% of its virtual points had been spent on virtual world prizes from partners Bella Sara, Cartoon Doll Emporium, ClubPenguin, Digital Doll House, Elf Island, Planet Cazmo, Stardoll, Webkinz, and ZooKazoo.

While tenuous, this is at least a sign of validation for this idea which places primacy on virtual goods over tangible products – http://blog.rebang.com/?p=1365
I think that’s definitely a sign of the trend. I called it out when BarbieGirls.com shifted from the toy-bsaed business model to subscriptions. The subscriptions (for digital content only) were more expensive than the toys. And it seems like they’re selling better too.

I recall the BarbieGirls.com shift, but this feels more significant to me. Perhaps because of the reach – Webkinz, Club Penguin, etc. Or maybe because I felt that Mattel didn’t have the best pairing of virtual & tangible. Either way, with continuing news that consumers have retrenched, I have a feeling this won’t be the first report of virtual goods trumping tangibles.
